BUSPH and Chicago Tribune partner to map heat risk in Chicago

A timely collaboration between the School of Public Health’s Center for Climate and Health and the Chicago Tribune, facilitated by idea hub, resulted in “the most comprehensive maps available to date of disparities in heat exposure across Chicago.”

In less than two months, the SPH research team created a public, searchable dashboard of interactive maps displaying heat patterns, cooling resources, and population demographics in Chicago, which reporters at the Tribune then incorporated into stories demonstrating how summer heat waves as a result of climate change will continue to exacerbate health disparities across Chicago, and what the city’s policymakers can do to combat this.
